How do I use the Knovel Search Widget?

Q: What is a Widget?
A: A Widget is a tiny application, almost like a mini-website you can run on your computer desktop, or on the web. In addition to your desktop, Widgets can run on personal homepages like iGoogle, or on your profile on social networking sites like Facebook, Friendster or MySpace.

Q: How do I install the Knovel Search Widget?
A: Easy. Just pick your platform using the buttons above, and in a few clicks you will be connected to Knovel Search like never before. If you are a Windows 2000 or XP user, the widget will install just like any other application. Just download, double-click the KnovelSearchWidget.exe and in a few clicks the Widget will be running on your desktop.

Q: I tried to install the Widget and it did not work. Did I do something wrong?
A: Are you at work? Some companies restrict user abilities to download and install applications. Talk to your Help Desk or run the Widget on your home computer. Alternatively, use the Widget on the web, like a personal homepage or Facebook. Running the widget on the web requires no install.

Q: I installed the widget but the content did not load.
A: Give the widget a minute. The first time the content loads it could take a minute or so to load the data. Subsequent updates are faster.

Q: How do I uninstall the Widget?
A: If you are running the Widget on Windows XP or 2000, just go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Applications. Find the Widget and uninstall. If you are using any other platform, please refer to the provider website for information on removing a Widget.

The Knovel Search Toolbar

The Knovel toolbar allows you to easily search our site using a plugin toolbar.

›› Download the toolbar for Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.

To install:

  1. Download the zip file to your computer.
  2. Extract and run the KnovelToolbar.exe to install the toolbar.
  3. Follow the installer instructions.
  4. Restart your browser(s).

 

Add Knovel as a Search Engine

Add Knovel Search directly to your Internet Explorer or Firefox Browsers as a Search Plugin.

Add to Internet Explorer:

  1. See the screenshots and instructions below to add Knovel to your choice of search engines.
  2. Click on the drop down arrow next to the Search Toolbar and select Find More Providers...(If this dropdown option is not available, click here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/searchguide/en-intl/default.mspx)
  3. This page contains a box titled "Create Your Own".
  4. Add Knovel as a custom search engine by entering the following URL: http://www.knovel.com/web/portal/basic_search?_EXT_KNOVEL_BASIC_SEARCH_bs_query={TEST}&src={referrer:source?}
  5. For box number #4 - specify the name as "Knovel"
  6. Then press install and the Knovel Search will be added to your IE7 Search
  7. After closing and restarting your browser, select Knovel from the dropdown as shown below

Add Knovel Search to your Firefox Browser:

  1. ›› Download this zip file.
  2. Open the zip file in the pop up window
  3. Open your broswer and paste the following path url C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins
  4. Copy and Paste the file from download named " " into your searchplugins folder
  5. Close and Restart Firefox
  6. The Knovel Search plugin will show up in your list of search engines on your search toolbar, use the dropdown to select Knovel
