Helpful Hints & Tips on Using Knovel

Knovelized Tables and Graphs (Figures)

Many conventional PDF rendered pages will contain “true to the book” Tables and Graphs.

Tables and Graphs that have a “red ring” around them have been knovelized. Knovelized Tables and Graphs are often called Live or Interactive. Clicking on them renders the Table or Graph in the Knovel format.

Knovelized Tables can feature:
  • Column headings that once clicked will sort the column in ascending order. A second click will sort in descending order.
  • Rows of interest may be selected, facilitating a more manageable Table.
  • Search Table button provides for local searching within the Table.
  • ( Live Eqns.): equation and no. hot links trigger Java Plotter Applet.

Knovelized Graphs can feature:
  • (Interactive Graph): Triggers Java Graphing Applet.
  • (Graph Table): Triggers Java XY-viewer Applet allowing for multiple side-by-side graphs.

IDS - Interactive Deeply Searchable There are IDS Tables, IDS Graphs, and IDS Equations with Plots in many of the books aggregated on www.knovel.com. You can encounter IDS Tables and IDS Graphs while simply viewing .pdf files (they have a “red box” around them), in search results, or in tables of contents. The examples below all take a short cut through the “View All Featured Titles” section at the bottom of the Knovel Home Page.

For an example of an IDS Table:
  • Click on “Knovel Critical Tables”
  • Expand the “Basic Physical Properties of Chemical Compounds” (the number after “Table” indicates the number of entries for that table)
IDS Table Features
  • By clicking on the “Sort Table” feature listed above the header titles, you will sort the entire table, alphabetically or numerically, by the heading you select
  • Click on the # in the “No.” column and get the summary for that compound
  • Click on the structure icon and get the molecular structure
  • Fill in the pick boxes, located in the farthest left column, for a few of the compounds. Click “Select Rows”, you will get a sub-table with only the rows selected.
  • You can add or delete rows from your new sub-table
  • You can also search within that table
  • You can view the actual text on the book page
  • Cut and paste discrete-cell data into Excel
  • Cut and paste into Word

For an example of an IDS Graph:
  • Click on Perry’s Chemical Engineers Handbook
  • Perry’s CEH > Interactive Graphs > Figure 2-4 Water Content of Air

    1. You may need to disable your pop-up blocker so you can choose Java or Flash

IDS Graph Features
  • Trace a curve with the mouse, click, values appear in the X-Y Table
  • Create multiple tables with different names
  • Use Curve Navigation to select among created tables
  • Selectable units
  • X-Y tracker
  • Tables can be exported, copied and pasted, or printed
  • Zoom control

For an example of an IDS Equation with Plot:
  • Click on Perry’s Chemical Engineers Handbook
  • Perry’s CEH > Interactive Tables > Table 2-6 > methane equation

    1. You may need to disable your pop-up blocker so you can choose Java or Flash

IDS Equation with Plot Features
  • Trace the curve with the mouse, click, values appear in the X-Y Table
  • Actual equation is stated
  • Create multiple tables with different names
  • Use Curve Navigation to select among created tables
  • Selectable units
  • Log/Linear selectable
  • Tables can be exported, copied and pasted, or printed
  • Zoom control
